Three Simple Ways to Find Stillness

Life is so busy, it’s easy to find yourself rushing around, finding that another day is over and the to-do list is still never ending. This time of year encourages us to do ‘more’: shop more, socialise more, buy more, do more, see more…it can be hard to keep up and before you know it, you’re burnt out and overwhelmed.

Here are my three favourite ways to find some stillness and take a pause:

1. Take your time with a cup of tea / coffee

Whether you’re a morning coffee or tea person, take that time in silence. Don’t look at your phone, don’t even read a book. Sit for a while and either look out of a window or take some time to sit with your thoughts. For me, this always feels like I’ve closed a few tabs in my brain and I end up feeling lighter and more peaceful, even if it’s only taken 5 minutes.

2. Say ‘no’

Realising that ‘no’ is a complete sentence can be revolutionary. Reframing saying ‘no’ to something as saying ‘yes’ to something else can really help if you’re not used to that. For example ‘no’ to going out or doing something when you just don’t feel like it or haven’t got the time, is really saying yes to prioritising your peace. And remember: A “no” very often is a “yes” to yourself!

3. Notice your senses

I’m sure by now you’ve heard of mindfulness. But taking time to notice what you can see, smell, touch, hear and taste is a great way to get back into your body and find a pause. This works particularly well when outside, as nature brings an abundance of things to sense, but this exercise can be done anywhere to provide a moment of calm.

There are ENDLESS ways to find stillness, but the last thing you need is to add more to your “To Do” list. Try one of these simple ideas and let me know how it feels?
